about

John Thorn, who plays on other tracks on this album, contacted me from the quiet seaside in New South Wales, Australia and asked if I'd write lyrics for some music he'd written. At first he thought it should be called "All the Money That I Lost," but then changed it to "Don't Look Back." Either way, a song about some sort of regret, it seemed. This is what we came up with together.

lyrics

The moon rose in the east as I climbed aboard the ship
Heading for the north sea
She saw me draw a breath, she said are you afraid
I stammered out, "I am."
Her smile became a laugh as I stared at the expanse
Stretching out before me
We'd stowed away our youth and sailed to chase our dreams
Down the streets of Amsterdam

Don't Look Back
The past does not exist
Don't Look Back
There's nothing there to miss

We shivered from the cold and sat in a cafe
Across from Gare du Nord
We shared a lemonade (it was all we could afford)
And sipped it like Champagne
Then a band began to play somewhere down the boulevard
And I'd wondered what I'd come here for
She must've seen it on my face, cause she pulled me from my chair
And out into the rain (she said)

Don't Look Back
There's nothing more than this
And as we danced
The music underscored our kiss

The moon rose in the east as I disembarked the ship
Pulling into Sydney
I couldn't get a cab, so I trundled up the hill
Like any other day
Then a band began to play from a pub across the road
And the melody undid me
So I buttoned up my coat and lit a cigarette
And let the decades slip away

Don't Look Back
But I had to take a glance
I close my eyes and held her close
And I began to dance
